What does the word 'Reiki' mean?

The word REIKI (pronounced Ray-key) is a Japanese word meaning 'universal life energy' or 'spiritual energy', referring to the vital, creative life force that flows through everything. The term 'Reiki' can be used to refer to spiritual energy or universal life force; or to the natural therapy system rediscovered by Dr Mikao Usui of Japan in the late 1800's, an ancient tradition of healing through the hands.

When the term 'Reiki' is used to refer to the natural therapy, it is referred to as the 'Usui System of Natural Healing'. The Usui System of Natural Healing is a unique, gentle, non-intrusive system of natural healing using non-polarised energy for enhancing health and wellbeing.

What is Reiki's history?

Reiki's history is an ancient one. Reiki can be traced back through Japan to Buddhist practices in use in Tibet more than 2000 years ago. In the late 1800's, Dr Mikao Usui of Japan rediscovered Reiki. His teachings were passed on through his students in Japan, and just prior to World War II, Reiki reached the western world through Ms Hawayo Takata, from Hawaii. However, it wasn't until the 1970's that Ms Takata passed on, through her students, the ability to teach Reiki to others. Since then, the Usui System of Natural Healing has evolved from the original teachings of Dr Usui into a diverse system of natural healing that is practised in many countries throughout the world.

What is the Usui System of Natural Healing?

Reiki, the Usui System of Natural Healing is a natural therapy system that uses vibrational energy techniques to enhance health and wellbeing. Reiki is based on the principal that a balanced energy system leads to a healthy mind and body, a principal common to many natural therapies. However, Reiki is unique in that it uses non-polarised or non-dualistic energy flowing through the centre of the practitioner's hands to support the client's body to restore balance to the body's energy system and harmonise the whole being - body, mind, emotions and spirit. No other aids such as medicines, herbs, breathing techniques, exercises or visualisation are required for this natural therapy system to operate.

What happens during a Reiki treatment?

The client lies on a professional practitioner's massage table (or sits in a comfortable chair, if unable to lie down) and the practitioner's hands are placed in a systematic way on or just above the body.

Clients remain fully clothed during a Reiki treatment. Clients will be asked to remove only their shoes for comfort. No private parts of the body need ever be touched by the practitioner.

The practitioner will gently hold her hands systematically on or over specific areas of the client's body, front and back; holding each position for about 3-5 minutes, or sometimes longer. The practitioner has the intent that Reiki will move through the practitioner's body, out through her hands to the client's body. The practitioner's hands do not direct the Reiki energy; they just allow Reiki to flow through them to the client. Reiki is drawn into the client's body and flows to whichever area needs the energy, whether the need is spiritual, mental, emotional or physical.

As Reiki flows through the practitioner's hands to the client's body, the client may begin to feel calmer in both mind and body, as she/he begins to let go of physical tension, busy thoughts and worries. Although the practitioner and client may talk from time to time during a treatment, an atmosphere of quiet is beneficial for both the practitioner and the client, allowing a deeper state of relaxation to develop. Soft music may be played during the treatment to enhance relaxation, but is not a requirement of the treatment.

Giving Reiki treatments does not deplete the practitioner, as the practitioner's own life-force energy is not used in giving a treatment. Reiki acts in a unique and simple way, flowing through the practitioner's body, out through her hands to the client's body. In this way the practitioner is simply a channel or vehicle for transmitting Reiki.

The practitioner can often sense Reiki flowing, through gentle sensations in her hands such as warming, moving, tingling, cooling or vibrating energy. The client may also notice a pleasant physical sensation of warmth or tingling in his/her body under the practitioner's hands. However, some clients may notice nothing in particular, other than perhaps, an enjoyable sense of mental and or physical relaxation.

Remain open-minded during a Reiki treatment

Since Reiki activates the body's own natural ability to restore balance, the Reiki energy is directed by the innate wisdom of the client's body and is not dependent on diagnosis or prescription by the practitioner. Therefore, it is not possible to predict a specific outcome using Reiki.

The client can facilitate the process of the Reiki treatment by letting go, as much as possible, of any expectations of what will happen during the treatment, remaining open-minded, and maintaining a positive attitude of 'willingness' to receive Reiki. However, the client does not need to believe in Reiki for this natural therapy system to operate.

How will I feel during and after a treatment?

People's experiences during and after a Reiki treatment are diverse. As each person's state of health and wellness and level of self-awareness may differ, it is not possible to predict a specific outcome using Reiki. The benefits of a Reiki treatment, however, are always positive, and can often continue for some hours or days after a treatment.

People who receive a Reiki treatment from an experienced practitioner may notice many beneficial effects, such as an enjoyable feeling of being more relaxed or rested, or calmer in mind and body, or more energised. Some people experience a sense of deep peace during or after a Reiki treatment, others may experience a pleasant sense of increased self-awareness of their body, mind or emotions; or of their personal needs and priorities.

However, some clients may notice nothing in particular. For some, the positive effects of a Reiki treatment may not be immediately obvious, or may be delayed. For those who notice nothing in particular, the beneficial effects of the Reiki treatment may become more obvious after more than one treatment, as the client learns to recognise the more subtle nature of her/his personal mind-body experience.

It is advisable to drink a moderate amount of water after a treatment, in order to stay hydrated. Doing so, will support the balancing process that has been initiated by the Reiki energy.

How many treatments does a person usually need?

Reiki promotes stress reduction and relaxation and can be a valuable preventative measure, either as a one-off treatment or for more regular sessions. Many practitioners suggest from one to three Reiki treatments. In some cases, clients may choose to have more than three treatments. Clients should decide on how many treatments would be best after discussion with their practitioner, taking into account their identified needs and the recommendations of the practitioner.

Are there times when a Reiki treatment is not appropriate?

No. Reiki is always safe. Since Reiki is a non-dualistic energy, as well as non-invasive and low impact, it can only have a positive benefit. The practitioner's hands do not direct the Reiki energy or manipulate the client's body; they just allow Reiki to flow through them to the client. As Reiki activates the body's own natural ability to restore balance, the Reiki energy is directed by the innate wisdom of the client's body. As the client's body draws on and directs the Reiki energy, one cannot receive Reiki incorrectly or receive too much Reiki, nor can an imbalance be caused.

Do I need to have a health problem to receive a Reiki treatment?
No. One does not need to have a specific problem to enjoy the benefits of a Reiki treatment. Reiki promotes relaxation and harmonises the whole being (body, mind, emotions and spirit) and can be a valuable preventative measure, as either a one-off treatment or for more regular sessions.
Reiki complements other healing systems

Reiki complements other healing systems, including medical treatment, by promoting stress reduction, relaxation, and harmonising of body, mind, emotions and spirit.

Reiki should never be considered the only form of treatment for health problems. Reiki should be applied in conjunction with traditional medical treatment, and other complimentary natural therapies, such as Chinese medicine, homeopathy, and naturopathy, etc.

Reiki is not a not a substitute for medical advice. Please consult your doctor if you are concerned about specific health problems.
